WE COULD BUILD AN EMPIRE - Crno zvezdano prostranstvo i debeli oklopnik
13.09.2016. | |

We Could Build an Empire je alternative rock sastav iz Nićepinga u Švedskoj koji čine gitarista Pontus Wallin, basista i pevač Marcus Pehrsson i bubnjar Michael Olsson.

We Could Build An EmpirePozdrav, i hvala vam na ovom intervjuu. Vaš novi EP "In This Place" objavljen je u Maju. Kako ste zadovoljni reakcijom fanova i kritike?

Marcus: Zavisi, uglavnom prvo pišemo muziku, uglavnom par slepljenih rifova. Onda razvijamo vokalne melodije preko toga.

We Could Build An Empire

Prva pesma novog EP izdanja, "All in This Together" je napisana kao podrška Bernie-u Sanders-u i njegovoj predsedničkoj kandidaturi.

We Could Build An Empire

WE COULD BUILD AN EMPIRE - Black Starry Space and an Overweight Armadillo
13.09.2016. | |

We Could Build an Empire is an alternative rock trio from Nyköping, Sweeden formed by guitar player Pontus Wallin, bass player and lead singer Marcus Pehrsson and drummer Michael Olsson. The band will debut in front of the Croatian audience as a part of the Nordic Festival at the Vintage Industrial Bar in Zagreb and supporting She Loves Pablo in Zabok at the Regenerator club. Frontman Michael Pehrsson spoke to us about their latest EP, upcoming shows and the band itself.

We Could Build An Empire

Hello, and thank you for this interview. Your new EP "In This Place" came out in May. How are you satisfied with the response from fans and critics?

Marcus: So far, we could actually use more attention but that comes down to the fact that it’s a self-release and that it is a rock music EP. EP’s still seem to be better off and get more reviews in the pop music area, than they do in rock and metal genres, where the full-length album still is the big deal. But at the moment we’re having discussions with two different record labels regarding a forthcoming album, so we’ll see how that turns out. Maybe the songs of the EP will be part of a full-length album and properly released pretty soon…

How would you describe your music to those who’ve never heard it?

Marcus: It’s rock music with an alternative, sometimes progressive twist and pretty soft vocals.

Could you introduce the band to our readers, both the members and your history?

Marcus: We are a swedish three-piece rock band tying to do our own thing basically. We like to experiment with harmonies, different time signatures and stuff. Pontus Wallin (guitar) and I formed a band in 1992 called Last Laugh which was a very progressive band with grungy vibes and influences like King Crimson, Alice In Chains, Captain Beefheart and Primus. Our debut came out on Record Heaven in 1998 and the songs turned out pretty weird sometimes… You can check it out at iTunes etc. (laughs)

After a long break when I got my two kids and so on, Michael Ohlsson came in on drums and we eventually reformed the band as We Could Build an Empire. Our debut came out in 2011 and had some good press though it was a self-release. After that we have put more effort into writing, arranging and rehearsing new material and giving each song a life and a vibe of their own. Bringing in Zed Smon (Kent, The Cure) for mixing was a part of that process and we are really happy about how the songs on the EP turned out.

Now we have moved forward with more new tracks and the new single ”Worry of the Heart” will actually be out in the next few days! And new shows are coming up all the time so this seem to be the time of this band (laughs).

Looking through your songs, one could say your lyrics are very diverse. How do you come up with the topics for your songs? Does music come first, or do you write the lyrics then music?

Marcus: It depends, usually it’s music first, most likely a riff our two glued together. Then some vocal melodies develop over that. Hopefully with some inspiring words to build a theme or a poem on.

We Could Build An Empire

The first track on the new EP, "All in This Together" was written in support of Bernie Sanders’ presidential candidature. How do you view the fact that he had stepped down and given his support to Clinton?

Marcus: Well it’s so sad Bernie didn't make it as a candidate but the big business behind the scenes would not allow that to happen of course. I totally understand he chooses to back Hillary since the alternative with Trump is such a scary scenario. But the last thing I read on the net today was maybe Hillary will need a replacement due to health issues… so you never really know until its over, maybe it can be Bernie in the end anyway…

You also stated that you aren’t big fans of Ghost, talking about the same song. Could the similarities come from the same musical influences then?

Marcus: Yeah sure, I suppose we are into the same hard rock, heavy metal and grunge music of the 70’s, 80’s and the 90’s as they are. Another similarity are the soft vocals of course, especially today when most rock bands seem to think they need to sound angry and ”cool” like Metallica or Avenged Sevenfold. Most seem to have forgotten rock music can also have softer vocals like Rush or Zeppelin used to have.

Speaking about it, who are your main musical influences?

Marcus: I actually think the influences we had when we started still gives us a certain ”colour”, like King’s X, King Crimson, Alice In Chains and Peter Gabriel, to name a few. We are also into PJ Harvey and Radiohead as well as AC/DC and Pantera so it’s a big mix of very different stuff (laughs).

We Could Build An Empire

What image do you think your music conveys?

Marcus: Oh, that’s a difficult one… To me I think maybe it’s a huge bit of black space with a few bright shining stars in it that sometimes evolves into an overweight armadillo coming around… (laughs)

You will be visiting Croatia for two shows this week. Any previous experiences or connections to Croatia? Do you know what to expect?

Marcus: Yeah, I have been to Zadar on vacation with my family so I’m familiar with the wonderful climate, and I think Pontus have been to Croatia on a trip too. I met some really nice people there so I guess I will now too!

What can the fans expect from your show?

Marcus: They can expect a band that loves to play and we will do our best to make it a really great moment together with the audience!

Any last messages for our readers and your future fans?

Marcus: Music really can bring us together and that’s what we’ll keep believing, thank you for having us!
