Johnny McKelvey, THE RUMJACKS - ‘Više nas brinu ‘zmije’ u odelima!’
01.08.2016. | |

It was overwhelming to see just how many people enjoyed our music. Never thought I would ever even make it to Serbia let alone be able to play there and see some of your beautiful country.

Johnny:

Johnny:

Johnny McKelvey, THE RUMJACKS - 'We’re more worried about the ‘snakes’ in suits!'
01.08.2016. | |

The Rumjacks are one of the leading forces within Celtic punk genre nowadays. But be no wrong, their music is much more than whiskey and beer. They are ready to point their finger in the right direction, and speak about problems we may even not know existed. With the new album on the way, and the European tour in the process, it was just the right time to catch up. We spoke to Johnny McKelvey, bassist and vocalist.

From Sidney to Europe, it’s a long road in front of you. What are your impressions from this tour?
Johnny:
You are right, it's a long way to come but it worth every mile traveled. We are on tour for just over five months though out Europe and would tour longer if we could. We didn't really know what to expect this time around. We were in Europe around this time last year and it was amazing. Much bigger shows than expected, so this time we didn't know if it would be the same or not. So far it's blown our minds once again how welcoming Europe has been for us.

You have played at some of the biggest festivals on the continent. How exited are you for that? Are you preparing something different for the bigger stages?
Johnny:
There are so many festivals on this tour that we have heard (or known) about and to actually play most of them this year is amazing. Sharing the bill with so many bands we admire and respect is also a huge deal to us. In a way we like to approach every show with the same energy whether it be a huge festival or a club. No matter the show everyone deserves to see us playing as hard as we can no matter what.

The Rumjacks

This was your first time in Serbia, where you have solid fanbase. Are you familiar with your fans from here?
Johnny:
Online we got a lot of request from fans to come over and play, but when we finally made it over. It was overwhelming to see just how many people enjoyed our music. Never thought I would ever even make it to Serbia let alone be able to play there and see some of your beautiful country.

Have you heard anything about Serbia, Novi Sad or Exit festival before?
Johnny:
We have heard of Exit Festival and seen some previous line ups so when we got asked to play we were over the moon to be a part of such an amazing event. And let's be honest, it's not every day you get to play in a moat of a huge fortress in Serbia!

A while ago, you released a video for ’A Fist Full O’Roses’, and it has pretty dark background. What made you make something like that?
Johnny:
For us and Frankie, who writes the songs, these issues are very current to us and our lives back home in Sydney, Australia. We live with it every day and playing music in these times is becoming harder and harder. Sydney is dying! The live music scene is almost all but gone. Venues are closing, bars are shutting, more ridiculous laws are being introduced and making it hard for venues to survive. It isn't just the live music scene. It goes deeper than this. Overdevelopment, greed and corrupt politicians are just the tip of the iceberg of what is now killing a city we loved and call our home.

For most of the world, Australia looks like an almost perfect place, with only problems being snakes, alligators and spiders. How far that is from the real picture?
Johnny:
(laughs) Well, they do all exist but I would personally be more worried about the ‘snakes’ in suits that go to 'work' every day and make decisions on our behalf on how they think our county should be run. THAT is the most dangerous thing in Australia right now.

You have an album on the way. What can we expect from it?
Johnny:
We do! “Sleepin’ Rough” comes out on August 5th worldwide. Some good, honest songs we worked very hard on and are proud to be sharing with the world.

For the end – do you have any message for your fans over here?
Johnny:
THANK YOU! It means the world to us that we are able to do what we do and travel the world and see so many people enjoying this experience as much as we are. Thank you for all your support and we will definitely be back soon enough. Cheers!
