Nick Holmes, PARADISE LOST - 'Svaki album je novo poglavlje'
06.08.2016. | |

"The Plague Within" turneja je u toku i traje više od godinu dana.

Nick:

Nick:
Verovatno oko albuma "Icon", možda "Icon" i "Draconian Times".

Nick:

U našoj recenziji dali smo 9.5 albumu "The Plague Within", ja ga obožavam.

Nick:

Nick Holmes, PARADISE LOST - 'Each album is new chapter'
06.08.2016. | |

Shortly before the performance of doom / gothic icons Paradise Lost at this year's Exit Festival, we had a chance to briefly talk to their frontman. Find out what Nick Holmes had to say about the new album, the current tour, the past and future of the band exclusively at Nocturne magazine.

It’s been a couple of years since last time you played in Serbia. How does it feel to be back in our country?
Nick:
It is great. It’s been quite long since we played and this is very nice location for festival, and Exit festival is very diverse, a lot’s of different styles of music. It’s always fun to play where things are not just heavy metal. It will be interesting.

You have an impresive fan base here, they can’t wait to hear you tonight…
Nick:
I remember last time we played it was very good concert, so I expect this one to be too.

“The Plague Within” tour is on the run for almost a year. How has it been so far, are you satisfied with how fans react to the new songs?
Nick:
Really good. We’we been playing enough quite well, it’s almost time to start new album, so I guess. It’s going very well, it is very well received. When we play new songs people like them almost as much as old songs, so it’s ok.

Which song from the latest album do you like to play the most and why?
Nick:
I like “Beneath Broken Earth” cause it’s very, very slow, it’s not typical live song, it’s not crowd pleasing song but I just like playing it cause it’s kind of music we’re into. It’s not all about moshing and banging it’s just about something that sounds really big. So I guess at the moment it is this song.

Nick Holmes / foto Daniela

Are we gonna hear it tonight?
Nick:
No… (laughs).

But why?
Nick:
No, we’re gonna play some other songs. We play it on the other shows but for some reason we’re not playing it tonight.

Looking down the setlists from previous shows on tour, I noticed that they include a major amount of your heavier stuff from early days. Was it your intention or did it happen accidentaly?
Nick:
Yeah, yeah, I mean, a lot of early stuff sound good when you use them on live shows, stuff we did around 2000s we didn’t forget about them, we just don’t want to play them any more.

What’s your criteria when you choose the songs for the setlist?
Nick:
Well, we just play songs we like playing. I mean, people say they wanna hear this song or this song and then when you play it for the people that don’t know it, they don’t really like it. There’s about fifteen songs we know they always will like.

You can’t please everybody…
Nick:
No, you can’t. This is quite broad audience, on this festival, they might have heard more popy songs, maybe haevy, maybe not. You can do Wacken, you can do everything, but it is a mix mostly.

Almost 30 years, 14 albums and Paradise Lost are still here. What’s your secret? What keeps you moving forward?
Nick:
I don’t know really. I mean, when you do the album then you tour the album, the time really goes fast, it’s like three-four years cycle, so it just goes really quick. We became professional when we were really young, it’s hard to make a career now, but we don’t wanna stop.

In your opinion, what was the crucial point in the band’s career? Album or event that changed everything?
Nick:
Probably around “Icon”, perhaps “Icon” and “Draconian Times”. Probably that two albums were most important for the band. But, each group of albums, or each album is almost like new chapter, and I think the new album started a new chapter so we’ll see whate will happen.

They all are very different…
Nick:
Yeah, but certain albums have similar feel, “Icon” and “Draconian Times” have similar feel, and then we did “One Second” and “Host” and that was different  chapter, I don’t really like that chapter but still band did it, so…

“The Plague Within” came out about a year ago, what are your impressions?
Nick: It’s great, I really like the album, it sounds exactly how we wanted at that time, it’s fine. I don’t really regret any album we did because each felt right at the time, even when somebody say it sucks we don’t really think like that. Every album is flash of how you sounded like when you did it.

In our review we gave you 9.5 for “The Plague Within”, I love it. So I was wondering, how much attention do you pay to critics and reviews, do you read them?
Nick:
Thank you very much! Yes, of course, totally. That’s how you know something is good or shit. I mean, if I think something is shit I know it’ll get a bad review. People who are watching music, listening to music they are into, they are like many other people, it’s very subjective thing, but if something is shit you know it is shit, and everyone else does.

Lots of critics and fans compare “The Plague Within” with “Draconian Times” and some songs really feel like they could have been written at that time. It has a similar vibe…
Nick:
I don’t think they sound similar. “Draconian Times” is very 90s album, it sounds like 90s album. This one sounds very personal, and it’s very upbeat as well. I don’t necessarily agree with that, but it’s fine.

Speaking of “Draconian Times”, it remains your most popular album, but some like “Host” or “Symbol Of Life" never got recognition they diserve?
Nick:
They were not really metal albums, it wasn’t very good idea releasing them under the name of Paradise Lost cause everything else was fitting to boxes especially in heavy metal, more extreme heavy metal, if it was now we wouldn’t do it, we would do it as side project. You now, they are great albums, but if you are into metal you won’t like it.

Fan fact: I was born the same year you formed the band! So, how does it feel when people younger then your first release come to show, know your music and love your music?
Nick:
It’s good, it is great when you have children and parents and girls coming to shows, that’s really good thing. If it wasn’t kids I would be worried. That is what you need, not guys in fiftieths, that’s not good for the future.

And for the end, do you have a message for our readers and fans who can’t wait to see you on stage?
Nick:
It’s good to be back here, hope you’ll enjoy concert. Thanks for the support. We don’t come as much as we perhaps want to, but it is always great when we come here. Looking forward to come again.
